In light of the growing K-wave, with phenomena such as Squid Game and BTS, and despite the Covid-19, the French Community is one of the top European communities in the country, strong of more than 4,400 people. As the world 10th economy and a stronghold in R&D, South Korea is also an attractive destination for French businesses.

Here are 4 key figures to understand French presence in Korea!

Spread from the wider Seoul area in the Northwest of the country to the Gyeongnam region in the Southeast, the French population is at the heart of Korea’s business and industry hubs. The FKCCI has gathered French businesses in Korea on its map FranceinKorea21 whose locations corroborates the implantation of the population.

In Seoul, the French community is concentrated mainly in Seocho-gu around the French High-School (LFS), in Yongsan-gu, a district that hosts a major part of the foreign communities in the city, and in students’ districts.

When it comes to the evolution of French residents in South Korea, the Covid-19 pandemic has had an important impact on students and working holiday visas since January 2020 but did not impact business and permanent residents’ visas which, on the contrary, slightly but constantly increased over the past two years, with a community strong of more than 4,400 people (check out our Covid-19 updates on visas).

This trend is confirmed by the representation of the French population in South Korea. 58% of them is indeed represented by young workers and families between 20 and 39 years old.
