The France-Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI), in collaboration with the Embassy of France in the Republic of Korea and the UN Women Knowledge and Partnerships Centre in the Republic of Korea is organizing an event on Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women on Wednesday, June 18, 2025.
This event aims to strengthen collaboration between the three institutions by exploring ways to mainstream gender equality in policies, promote global principles for women’s empowerment both within and beyond the workplace, and align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as well as France’s feminist foreign policy on the international stage.
The event takes place in the wake of the latest International Women’s Day announcements from the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, which introduced a new interministerial strategy for feminist foreign policy.
WHY ORGANIZE THIS EVENT?
At the national level, the Republic of Korea has the largest gender pay gap among OECD countries, despite government efforts to implement more family-friendly policies, particularly around childbirth. At the same time, gender stereotypes remain deeply ingrained across various sectors, from advertising to boardroom dynamics and representation. A recent survey revealed that 76% of Korean women believe gender discrimination exists in the workplace, limiting their career advancement and promotion opportunities. Moreover, in 2024, the number of married women leaving the workforce reached 1.2 million, accounting for 16% of all female workers in the country.
At the same time, there is a growing sense of unease and rejection among younger generations of men, who perceive feminism as a threat to their way of life or view recent efforts to eliminate gender discrimination as reverse discrimination.
FOCUS ON CORE ISSUES
What are the key principles and priority actions needed to empower women in the private sector, based on global norms and best practices?
How can businesses be equipped with the tools to prevent the perpetuation of gender stereotypes and foster healthy work environments?
How can companies promote work-life balance and support sustainable family care for their employees? What are some best practices, lessons learned, and strategies to overcome challenges in implementing family-friendly policies?
What are the best approaches to ensuring a safe, inclusive workplace for both men and women while avoiding backlash or so-called ‘witch hunts’ against gender equality advocates?
What values do business representatives embody in the South Korean context, and what influence can they have on gender debates in the country?
Particular emphasis will be placed on experience-sharing, with business leaders showcasing best practices within their companies and discussing the outcomes of gender equality policies and initiatives they have implemented.
