-How to improve upward and downward communication in multinationals- Access to the right information is a vital asset for any company. Within multinational companies in Korea, close interaction between foreign managers and local employees ensures a steady flow of information required for effective management and decision making.

At a practical level, it poses a dual challenge:

  • For foreign managers who need a daily flow of information and feedback, they should learn the most effective ways to encourage their Korean staff to speak up and share ideas openly and promptly.
  • For Korean employees who seek to meet the expectations of their managers, they should gain the ability to overcome their natural hesitation to speak up and give feedback freely, and when required.

Vectis has designed a new workshop focused on resolving obstacles to information flow between Korean employees and foreign managers. It is offered as two modules, from both stand points.

  • Module One for Korean employees: Friday, May 10, 1pm to 6pm
  • Module Two for foreign managers: Friday, May 17, 1pm to 5pm

PROGRAM

Module One [5 hours] is intended for Korean employees.
Key objectives and benefits are:

  • Understanding how teams’ interactions and work environments are shaped by cross-cultural values;
  • Identifying your communication style and that of your foreign managers, to improve conversations;
  • Recognizing your foreign managers’ leadership style and needs, and how to meet their expectations;
  • Training in techniques to overcome obstacles, feel more confident, and for being heard when:

               - Asking and answering questions during employee meetings

               - Sharing new ideas, expert opinion, feedback or bad news

Module Two [4 hours] is intended for foreign managers.

Key objectives and benefits include:

  • Understanding how teams’ interactions and work environments are shaped by cross-cultural values;
  • Recognizing key obstacles that prevent Koreans from speaking up or sharing opinions freely;
  • Understanding Korean leadership styles and corporate cultures that Korean employees are accustomed to;
  • Learning simple and effective techniques for eliciting information and feedback, and help your employees:
    • Be more at ease sharing ideas, valuable information or bad news, in a timely way;
    • Feel that their input is valued and that they are being heard by upper management.

Training approach for Module One and Module Two:

Each module is delivered separately for more open exchanges and confidentiality. Both are highly interactive with discussions, exercises and feedback from the instructor.

INSTRUCTOR
Simon Bureau has witnessed problems with ineffective information sharing first-hand while working with Koreans and consulting for foreign companies during the past 20 years in Korea.
His insight into Korean employees' values and mindset allows him to propose practical techniques to interact more freely and meet the needs and expectations of foreign managers.
At the same time, he relates to the leadership styles and priorities of foreign executives, and to what they expect of their Korean employees. He is able to recommend methods to create environments conducive to more open upward communication, and suitable for Korean employees.
