FKCCI Updates | Economy - Marriage Trends in Korea Show Strong Recovery

Marriage trends in Korea have shown a notable recovery, with the number of unions reaching its highest level in seven years in 2025. This development reflects evolving social dynamics and renewed momentum across the country.
A total of 240,300 marriages were recorded, representing an 8.1% increase compared to 2024 and confirming a third consecutive year of growth. This upward trend follows several years of decline and signals a gradual stabilization of marriage patterns nationwide.
According to the Ministry of Data and Statistics, this increase is largely driven by demographic factors, including a growing population in their early 30s. At the same time, perceptions of marriage are becoming more positive among younger generations, contributing to the rebound.
The data also highlights a continued shift in life patterns, with individuals choosing to marry later. The average age at first marriage reached 33.9 for men and 31.6 for women in 2025, reflecting changing priorities related to career development, financial stability, and lifestyle choices.
In parallel, divorce rates declined by 3.3% year-on-year, suggesting improving relationship stability. Multicultural marriages, while slightly decreasing to 8.6% of total unions, continue to represent a meaningful component of Korea’s social landscape.
These trends provide valuable insight into the ongoing transformation of Korean society, shaped by demographic evolution, shifting values, and long-term structural changes.
As Korea continues to adapt to these dynamics, understanding social trends such as marriage patterns remains essential for businesses, institutions, and policymakers engaging with the Korean market.
