FKCCI Updates | Politics - South Korean Citizens Recommended for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize

South Korean citizens have been recommended as candidates for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of their peaceful collective resistance to the declaration of martial law on December 3, 2024.
The nomination was submitted in January to the Norwegian Nobel Committee by several political scientists, including former and current leaders of the International Political Science Association. They put forward what they call the “Citizen Collective.”
The movement has been described as a “Revolution of Light,” referring to the lightsticks raised by citizens who gathered nationwide, including in front of the National Assembly. Within six hours, lawmakers voted to lift the decree, and protests continued in the following weeks. Courts later ruled the declaration illegal and unconstitutional.
Observers have highlighted the mobilization as a powerful example of non-violent civic engagement and democratic resilience. As Professor Kim Eui-young noted, the world witnessed how Korea overcame insurrection and reinstated democracy within months, with citizens playing a central role in the process.
