FKCCI Updates | Culture – Centre Pompidou Hanwha to Open in Seoul

France and Korea are set to further strengthen their cultural ties with the opening of the Centre Pompidou Hanwha in Seoul, scheduled for June 2026. This major initiative reflects a shared ambition to deepen artistic dialogue and expand the presence of French cultural institutions in Asia.
Signed in 2023, the four-year partnership between the Centre Pompidou and the Hanwha Foundation of Culture marks a significant step in bilateral cultural cooperation. The project aims to create a new platform for modern and contemporary art, connecting French, Korean, and international artistic scenes.
Located within the iconic 63 Building in Yeouido, Seoul’s leading financial district, the museum will span more than 10,000 square metres across four levels. Designed by Jean-Michel Wilmotte, the space has been reimagined as a “box of light”, combining architectural innovation with references to traditional Korean design.
Over the coming years, the museum will present two exhibitions annually drawn from the Centre Pompidou’s collections, alongside dedicated programmes highlighting Korean contemporary artists and major global art trends. Educational and cultural initiatives will also be developed to engage a wide range of audiences.
The opening exhibition, “The Cubists: Inventing Modern Vision”, will launch on June 4, 2026, offering Korean audiences an exploration of one of the most influential movements in modern art.
As the FKCCI celebrates its 40th anniversary alongside the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations between France and Korea, this project illustrates the growing importance of cultural cooperation in strengthening bilateral relations and fostering long-term connections between the two countries.
